Mixed Feelings

Exploring the poetics and patterns found in the common language of American popular music, Mixed Feelings illustrates a collection of thousands of song titles culled from 60 years of music history. Sorted based on the title’s usage of verbs such as think, feel, do, and say, the collection of texts is presented as an 4-track audio score engraved in black glass. Using the components of feeling, thinking, communicating, and acting, the piece explores the poetics of texts as a means to expose patterns in emotive language used in popular culture and affect within collective consciousness.

Drawing with Sound #1: Mixed Feelings
In conversation with the drawing of sound waves in the large glass piece, the audio translates that composition into actual sound. Here, language takes form as an abstracted beat structure in an attempt to reflect shifting levels of awareness inherent within lived experience.
